Throughout his career at the Bar, Ben has been known not only as a skillful advocate and lawyer, but also as a good team-player who is very easy to get along with: one leading legal directory describes him as ‘very approachable and collaborative while also being ferociously intelligent .’

This gives Ben just the right combination of intellectual and social skills to thrive on mediation, and he has considerable experience of this and other forms of ADR, both as a participant and as a mediator or chair. He also frequently acts as a determining expert under QC resolution clauses in insurance policies, retainers and funding agreements.

In his legal practice, Ben acts in all forms of commercial dispute, but with a primary emphasis on insurance. He has a special interest in costs and litigation funding, which is reflected in his ranking as a first-tier costs silk by both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500. He has appeared in most of the leading costs cases of the last 20 years. Ben also has a great deal of experience of the personal injury, clinical negligence and claims management sectors, the former from many years of advising solicitors conducting personal injury and clinical negligence cases on civil procedure and regulatory issues, and the latter from his long standing involvement in the protracted litigation about credit hire providers and other claims organisations. Ben has also appeared extensively on costs and procedural issues in group litigation cases and in follow-on claims in the Competition Appeals Tribunal. All this gives him the background knowledge, and market experience, to provide costs-related ADR services across a very broad range of legal practice.

Ben studied at Oxford, graduating with a double first, and was a major scholar of Lincoln’s Inn. He has practised as a barrister in London since 2000 and took silk in 2015. He is also a member of the Bar of the British Virgin Islands. He edited Cordery on Legal Services from 2005 to 2012, and is a former editor of the White Book.
