Paul is a successful and seasoned costs practitioner. He has extensive experience of advising on and litigating the costs of high value claims at all levels, including the Court of Appeal and, more recently, a heavyweight commercial instruction in the Supreme Court of the British Virgin Islands. Over the past 15 years his practice has been fairly equally split between representing paying and receiving parties.
Although he enjoys the academic challenge of technical arguments, Paul prides himself on bringing a pragmatic approach to the dispute resolution process and will seek to keep clients out of court if at all possible. Consequently, he has enjoyed popularity as a mediator, having managed disputes of up to £20m. He is well regarded for his personable approach (both in and out of court) and lectures regularly to solicitors and costs draftsmen.
Paul practices exclusively in the law of costs. He has been ranked in Chambers UK since 2008 (Band One with only one other practitioner since 2014). Clients are “equally impressed with his abilities in technical matters and on his feet”, praising him for his “strong opinions and advice” and “good grasp of technical issues.” Most recently described as “an exceptional advocate, always very well organised and prepared and very persuasive” Paul is keen to continue the expansion of his mediation practice as cost-efficient dispute resolution becomes crucial to cashflow after the challenges of 2020.
Paul is one of only three barristers to have qualified as a Costs Lawyer and Commissioner for Oaths.
